"Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The purpose of this study is to describe clinical and social conditions pertaining to the pathogenesis and diagnosis of dependence on sedative and hypnotic drugs, in order to form a basis for hypotheses about the etiology of these conditions. We have chosen to investigate a group of psychiatric inpatients dependent on sedative and hypnotic drugs without previous or concomitant abuse of other dependence-inducing substances, permitting a clinical diagnosis of dependence in the studied patients. Comparisons have been made with regard to sex, age and socioeconomic conditions with the population in the department's catchment area and with regard to other conditions with a matched control group from the population of Stockholm.
